Quilting for Oahu, Hawaii quilters
Our sew-in tonight was fun! Some generous members brought a lot of food, which the rest of us enjoyed munching on. Although tonight’s sew-in was only four hours long, people got a lot done!
Five members made our free project: a Japanese-style cross-back apron.
I forgot to take a picture of the backs of their aprons, though! >_<
Business was:
We collected pincushions for our swap with the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild. Everyone made wonderful pincushions!
Our next charity quilt will be using Elizabeth Hartman’s Cat-vent quilt tutorial.
Dari did a presentation about batting, and Mai shared information about our designer of the month: Elizabeth Hartman!
During show and tell, Annie shared some quilts she made for friends.
Ronnie showed her in-progress baby quilt for an early arrival!
Sue shared her quilt made using Kaffee Fassett fabric.

We’ll be offering a cross-back apron project at the March sew-in.
Mai did a great designer-of-the-month presentation on Jeni Baker of In Color Order. We shared a quilt made from her fabric and her Giant Vintage Star tutorial to introduce her work to our members.
Sue sewed a sample of MQG‘s block of the month.
Dari did a really neat demonstration of how to make fabric washi tape!
And Sue demonstrated Crazy Mom Quilts ticker tape quilt.
During show and tell, Connie brought out her fantastic quilt that she made from a kit she won at our holiday party! Fabric from the kit was donated by Kilauea Kreations.
Then Sue showed us her wonderful Postcards quilt made with Carkai fabric.
Sue also shared a patriotic quilt and a Moda quilt.
We announced at our January meeting that we would be having a pincushion swap with the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild, and here are the details!
It’s possible that the number of people who bring pincushions from each guild may not match up. If we collect more pincushions than Great Lakes does, you might get a pincushion from one of our own guild members. But that’s okay, because that’s fun, too!
We’re looking forward to seeing your beautiful pincushions at the March meeting!

Sharon gave a fantastic presentation on the basics of English paper piecing and foundation paper piecing! She also demonstrated with a foundation paper-pieced heart block that she drafted herself.
We presented the three completed quilts and a pillowcase for Oahu Care Facility, but forgot to get photos. Here’s a picture of the pillowcase made from an orphan block, though!
During show and tell, Leslie shared the Poolside Tote that she finally finished after last year’s workshop.
She also made a quilt that came out perfectly, even though she said it made her brain hurt! 😀
We were lucky to have Deb Trail stop by on her way home, and she shared a gorgeous pillow cover that she made from Quilt Lovely.
Norine finished a second travel quilt after Val’s fantastic Jammin’ It workshop!
She also completed her quilt top from Val’s stack ‘n whack workshop.
Alli brought one of the travel quilts she made after Val’s workshop.
On Sunday, Ronnie taught a great Boston Commons workshop! It was an expanded version of the free demonstration she did at April’s general meeting. She showed her students a fun and speedy way of doing a majority of the piecing without ever cutting the threads.
Sharon finished her quilt top in about three hours!
On Saturday, Val taught an epic stack ‘n whack workshop to make a hexagon star quilt. With the precision cutting and piecing strategies, it was invaluable having a teacher right there to help us along!
Norine sewed up a lovely Hawaiian fabric quilt top. It’s amazing that all of the kaleidoscopic hexagons were created with the same fabric that’s in the outermost border!
Alli made a Cotton + Steel version. Since she didn’t include a border, it’s hard to tell, but all of the hexagons are made from the stripy Paper Cuts Earth print.
On Saturday, Val taught a fantastic travel quilt workshop. The quilts are batting-less, and the front and back are joined along half of the inside seams in a really neat technique. They’re perfect for folding up small and taking on plane trips, and they’re also great for gifting!
Val showed us how to make the quilts even more quickly by using half-yard cuts and strip piecing, and Norine made an adorable one using Cotton + Steel prints.
Roxy finished a happy dots quilt during the workshop.
New quilter Toni finished her very first quilt, ever, during the workshop!
Alli made an Elsa quilt for her niece. 😀
Nancy L sewed a planes, trains, and clouds quilt for her son!
Nancy F was the only student who didn’t use the strip piecing method — she planned her layout before class and sewed her quilt together with blocks she had cut out beforehand. It turned out wonderfully!
In December, we donated our two wee animals quilts to Kapiolani Medical Center!
We were so happy with our members’ enthusiasm and creativity, and we were all excited at the thought of new babies receiving the quilts we worked together to make.
Trinia quilted clouds on one quilt, and Alli quilted dots and dashes on the other,
Bridget and Sue bound the quilts, and we couldn’t be happier with the results!
Our Patriot Quilt is finally at its new home!
Ronnie and Mai went to deliver it to the Soldier & Family Assistance Center on Schofield. It will be displayed at the center in their lobby/lounge room where they have weekly meetings and soldiers, including wounded warriors, gather.
They got to present the quilt at the weekly briefing. The people at Schofield were all appreciative and loved the quilt!
A photo of the quilt presentation will be published in the Schofield community paper, and we will be sure to share the photo once we receive it!
