Dinosaurs and collages make wonderful quilts.

Sew day fun

At lot of us had fun at our August “sew day” get together. We also sewed industriously. At our September meeting, a member gave a talk and show about their journey in quilting. She mentioned that quilting doesn’t have to follow the “rules”.  Shown is one of her quilts that didn’t follow the “rules”, and is more of a collage of things she felt were harmonious together. The star pattern was from one of the workshops the Oahu Modern Quilt Guild presented in 2018 by Krista Moser.

Dinosaurs galore

In May, we showed a member starting a dinousaur quilt for her grandsons. Here’s the finished quilt. She made the quilt using a pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. There’s a lot of dinosaurs roaring there.

Our next meeting is October 17, 2022 at Halawa District park in Aiea, Hawaii. From 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. If you want to join, please email us a request at communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com . The first meeting is complimentary.

Just so you know, we don’t get any renumeration from any of the products or links that are mentioned in our blogs.

Learning new tricks for quilts

quilt as you go that was done in sections

We had a very educational meeting last month. A member showed us her journey into Quilt As You go (QUAG).  She shared tips and tricks and some truly spectacular quilting that was intricate, yet was sewn in sections.

audience participation

We even had an audience participation time, where our intrepid club president led us in a chant from the village people, but substituted “in the quilt guild” for “in the navy. As usual, some mighty fine looking quilts were shown by other members.

If you want to join us for a meeting, please email us to ask if there is room at the venue. We are currently holding in person meetings. The first meeting is complimentary. Email us communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com. Our next meeting is September 21, 2022 at Halawa District Park, in Halawa, Honolulu.

Charity Quilts and lots more quilting

quilts of valor

At our last general meeting we had many quilts shown that were sewn for several of the charities we donate to. One was a stellar red, white and blue quilt for Quilts of Valor Foundation. These quilts are awarded only to service members and living veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Others were more whimsical baby quilts for Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s Medical Center. The quilts are given to babies from families in need and others are used to cover the incubators in the neonatal ICU (quilts are then given to the families when the babies go home).  The comment heard from many of the quilters were that we could find lots of cute “girly” fabric, but less fabric more for “boys”.  So presented here are two quilts made especially for those that are sports minded.

Paper Piecing, Palm Trees and Charity Quilts

Concentrating on getting the piecing right.

Everyone had a splendid time at our June Sew Day.  We each did a block of paper piecing of a palm leaf to make into a charity quilt for the Modern Quilt Guild. We have a pattern designed by our president Christine, that shows gradients for the palm leaves. The theme is color shift with a two color gradient. The quilt will be worked on by the whole Oahu Modern Quilt guild and then donated and auctioned by the Modern Quilt Guild who will donate the proceeds to two Atlanta area charities where the 2023 QuiltCon will be held.

Are you sure this is the correct side?

Some of us found the paper piecing easy to do since we knew how to paper piecing. Others, like me, have since vowed to never do paper piecing again.  It’s hard enough to do regular piecing, but thinking upside down and backwards!!!.  After the scrumptious potluck lunch we had, ALL of us seemed to have a harder time concentrating. A lot of “Oh, I’ve got to take out the stitches and resew this one again” comments were heard.

We also showed the results of the name challenge quilt where we had to sew using only two colors representing our first and last name. Here’s one of the winners.

A plethora of Quilts

Is it “modern” or is it “traditional”? either way it’s beautiful.

Since we aren’t having a general meeting in June (we’ll be having a members only Sew Day/workshop), here are some photos of quilts that were presented by our members during the past meetings. Aren’t they amazing quilts?  And they’re all made by amazing people.  Come join us sometime.

We are currently holding in person meetings. The first meeting is usually complimentary. Our next meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2022 at Halawa District Park from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Email us communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com if you would like to attend.

Looks modern to me.

Quilts, Quilts and more Quilts!

Pac Man Comes in a quilt. Look at the maze that Reid sewed and quilted.

We’re not having an open general meeting this month. We’re having a sewing workshop (for members only) learning paper piecing. We’ll be back after the workshop to show some of the paper piecing we did.  We’ll also have some pictures of the color name quilt challenge that was initiated in February. We had to make a two color quilt using our names and designated colors, what fun!

Meanwhile, here are few of the pictures of more of the quilts shown at our last meeting. Critters Galore. Check out all the little critters. Can you find the adorable porcupine?

Quilting amid verdant green mountains

We had a wonderful day at the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Time was spent to sew and just see what others were doing. We had our lunch beneath the Koolau Mountains that were misty with rain, luckily it didn’t rain on us.

Barb, Martha, Christine and Cheryl were having a blast discussing a project that Christine brought to work on.

There were a lot of gadgets people brought to the April Sew Day.

Stretcher bar for quilts, magnifying glasses with light, portable light that bends a lot, a gripper for the ruler. Whew, lots and lots.  We may have a gadget day show and tell in the future so you can see the gadgets in action.

Pam brought a dinosaur quilt she’s sewing for her grandson. Can’t you just hear the dinos ROAR!

If you’re interested in attending one of our meetings, please email us to ask if there is room at the venue. We are currently holding in person meetings. The first meeting is complimentary. Email us communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com.

Quilting Curves and artistry in motion

Artistry in motion! Presentation by Jackie Marks was illuminating and just plain WOW.  Those of you who weren’t there in person missed being able to see all of the detailed quilting she did.

Other members showed their current quilting. Look at Ellen’s quilt made of edges of fabric left over from her other quilts.  Christine showed her artistic quilting of her canine friend. And Martha showed her panel quilt where she experimented with outline quilting.  All in all a fun time for everyone there.

We had a video by Jacquie Gering about doing curves with a walking foot. Great learning opportunity for those of us who haven’t yet mastered free motion quilting.

Free motion quilting by a member

Look at the exquisite detail on these quilts!

Creative, gorgeous, superb, and just plain WOW were a few words used to describe the quilts shown by Oahu Modern Quilt Guild Member, Ruth D. when we all saw her quilts that were showcased in our member spotlight section.  Look at the exquisite detail in the free motion quilting. If only you were there to see it in person. Ruth said she plans out the quilting before hand and then quilts with her sewing machine (a Janome) that is NOT a long arm

Other people showed their quilts, just look at the cute penguin quilt by Jackie M, and the boy oriented baby quilt done by Paula T. to donate to Kapiolani Medical Center.

We had a wonderful video about negative space from the Modern Quilt Guild website (one of member benefits).

Get a look at our freebie table. This time there were actual bolts of fabric that each member could cut and take home, This is another member benefit.

Our next general meeting is on April 20, 2022 at Halawa District Park from 6:30pm – 7:30 pm. We will try to have a zoom component for those unable to attend in person.  If you’re interested in attending in person and are not already a member, please email us to ask if there is room at the venue. The first meeting is complimentary. Email us communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com for more information.

We will have a “Sew’n” day on April 30, 2022 from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe. This is for members only. We are encouraging everyone to bring their UFOs, WIPs to work on, or any other project they would like.  We would also like to ask everyone to bring their “orphan blocks” for a fun exchange.

Quilts for Charity – Babies and more

Look at all the baby quilts a member has sewn,

We’ve gotten so many quilts to be donated for Kapiolani Medical Center for babies in need and for Pearl Haven for the youths there. We’ve also been asked about guidelines for the quilts. Here are the links: Baby Quilts and Pearl Haven Quilts. Please do not donate directly to either Kapiolani or Pearl Haven. Contact us regarding donations.
